Pom Poko Studio Ghibli - Spoke Art
18x24″ giclee poster for Studio Ghibli’s Pom Poko, directed by Isao Takahata. The first time I saw the usage of magical Tanuki testicles I was a young man and mostly missed/ignored the message at the heart of most Ghibli movies: humans destroying the environment. In Japan this was the highest grossing kid’s movie for a while and testicles are just part of the normal culture. To western raised people its wacky and amazing so I wanted to capture that feeling (and my favorite scrot usages) but also the sad destruction of the tanuki’s habitat (Tanukis are real, actually more related to foxes than raccoons). Do you see what the elder tanuki has created with his magical scrotum? Part of Spoke Art's group show: SUGOI! An Art Show Tribute to Japanese Animation.
