The Korean Wave or Hallyu 한류 is a cultural phenomenon in which the global popularity of South Korean culture has dramatically risen since the 1990s. Growing up in rural, all-white, western New York state in the 80s and 90s and getting racism'd and othered, I never would have thought Korean culture would be where it's at now. Sometimes I wonder what if it was actually cool to be Korean when I was growing up? I came back inspired from a trip to Korea last summer and started on several personal projects, this one was sitting around partially finished because I didn't know what to do with the background and upon revisiting it I wanted to do chunky hangul lettering to make a bold 24x36" poster. Traditional meets modern. A hanbok dress jeonmo hat and janggu drum meets minhwa tattoos and combat boots. Go out there and enjoy some Korean culture!
